MERIT SALARY GUIDELINES
CENTER FOR ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE
(November 1995)
Each year the members of the faculty serving on the departmental Executive Committee will assign an overall rating to each faculty member for each of three categories of activity (teaching, professional/scholarly activity, and service), using a 10 point scale (10 being the highest and 1 being the lowest). Items to be considered in each category are indicated below. In all cases, the sources of information used in assessing activities will be material supplied by each faculty member either as a part of or in addition to each years updating of curriculum vitae. A priority factor will be assigned uniformly to the ratings for each faculty member with a multiplier of 2 applied to the teaching rating, 1 to the scholarly/professional activity rating, and 1 to the service rating. A cumulative total will then be derived with a maximum rating including all three categories of 40 points (see Figure 1).
To allow for individual differences in the weighted percentage assigned for the teaching, professional/scholarly activity, and service categories, the director will calculate a final merit salary rating using a formula incorporating the weighted percentage of assignment, committee rating, and priority factor for the combined categories (see Figure 2 attached). The basis for evaluation will be the calendar year immediately preceding the time of review. Work in progress will not be considered. For books, however, acceptance by a publisher, publications and reviews of the book will all be considered.
In those years when the university does not allow for merit raises, there will be an averaging of merit ratio the next time merit raises are given. For example, if there is no merit raise in 1996 but there is one in 1997, merit will be based on an average of the two years.
Teaching
Courses taught - All CESL classes will be considered for merit, including electives, although faculty have the option to drop the course with the lowest overall student evaluation for that year. Courses taught for special programs in which extra remuneration is received are excluded. Information reviewed will include:
Student Evaluations: In cases where extenuating circumstances might alter the interpretation of student and supplementary evaluations, faculty members are entitled to submit explanations or comments pertaining to the results. No distinction will be made for level or skill of classes taught. All student comments will also be considered.
Documented course development and implementation (taught in review year), including instructional materials, syllabus, and assessment instruments. To receive merit credit, each faculty member should submit: (1) a summary of the need for the course or course revision and how that need was met and (2) dated samples of all items listed above.
Peer/supervisor reviews
Mentoring: Provide a brief paragraph describing your mentoring activities.

Please summarize your work in all three categories (Teaching, Professional Activity, and Service).
Teaching
Provide a summary of your teaching assignments during the past calendar year (January 1 to December 31). Indicate the levels and skills you taught and comment on any work you have done in the areas of development of relevant and adopted supporting materials, adopted course syllabi, and adoption of tests. See Merit Salary Guidelines under Teaching. Samples should be included. Submit all teaching evaluation for each term taught in the calendar year (the lowest of the year may be dropped, at your option).
Professional Activity
List all relevant professional/scholarly work (conference presentations, articles, chapters, etc.) See Merit Salary Guidelines under Professional/Scholarly Activity.
Service
